Meningitis is an infection of the protective layers that cover the brain and spinal cord, and meningococcal group B bacteria are one of the main causes in the UK. It can be very serious and, in some cases, life-threatening if not treated quickly — bacterial meningitis can lead to lasting complications such as hearing loss, and can be fatal.
Cases are more common among teenagers and young adults, particularly when they move into shared accommodation such as student halls, where the bacteria can spread more easily through close contact, coughing and sneezing, or sharing cups and cutlery. That's exactly why the NHS runs a one-off catch-up vaccination programme for this age group before they head off to university or college.
Born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, and registered with a GP in England. Book online via the NHS website or call 119.
Born on or after 21 July 2001, and starting university or moving into further education accommodation for the first time this autumn. No GP registration needed — just walk in at a participating pharmacy.

If you're 17–18 and registered with a GP in England, you can book online through the NHS website or by calling 119. If you're heading to university or college for the first time this autumn, you don't need to register with a GP first — you can simply walk in during our opening hours.
As with our other vaccination services, priority is given to patients with a booked appointment, so booking ahead where you can means less waiting around.
