Flu (influenza) is a common but potentially serious illness caused by a virus that spreads easily from person to person, through coughs, sneezes and contaminated surfaces. Unlike a cold, flu tends to come on quickly — often within a few hours — and is far more intense: a sudden high temperature, aching body, extreme tiredness, a dry cough, headache and sore throat are all typical, and most people feel too unwell to carry on as normal for several days.
For many healthy adults, flu is unpleasant but passes within about a week with rest and fluids. For others, though, it can lead to serious complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, and can mean a stay in hospital. People aged 65 and over, pregnant women, and those with long-term health conditions (such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, or heart, kidney or liver disease) are at greater risk of these complications, which is exactly why the NHS prioritises them for a free annual vaccine.
You can get a free flu vaccine on the NHS if you're:
Including anyone who will turn 65 by 31 March 2027.
Including asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart, kidney or liver disease, certain neurological conditions, a weakened immune system, or a BMI of 40 or above.
At any stage of pregnancy.
Including unpaid carers, those in receipt of Carer's Allowance, and residents of care homes.
To help protect them as well as yourself.
Including those employed by a registered residential care or nursing home, or a domiciliary care provider.

Our flu vaccination service starts on 1 October 2026. You can book your appointment in advance through the NHS website or app, or simply walk in during our opening hours — though please note that priority is given to patients with a booked appointment, so booking ahead means less waiting around.
